Choosing local foods, restaurants and pubs is an easy way to practice local consumption.
“Midori Chochin (green lantern)” is one of the most famous symbols for pubs that mainly serve local produce.
Japanese style pub’s usually bear an “Aka Chochin (red lantern).” Unfortunately these pubs are dependent on foods imported from all over the world.
The Midori Chochin movement uses a contrasting color, “Green,” to represent a very different, eco-conscious way of procuring food.
The number of stars indicates the level of commitment to local production for local consumption.
Dr. Kiyoaki Maruyama first offered this idea in 2005 under a creative commons license. Today, there are more than 3,200 green lantern pubs in Japan.
